María, Te Adoramos
"The various modes of worship which prevailed in the Roman world were all considered by the people as equally true; by the philosopher as equally false; and by the magistrate as equally useful." (Gibbon)
Maybe the hipster or beat gives the proverbial fock off to a Gibbon, Hume and the old rationalists and secularists. Kerouac & Co probably considered Constitutional issues and so forth the very embodiment of useless crackerbarrel rhetoric, preferring the catholic iconography, or buddhist in some cases (though the beats did read and apparently approve of Spengler). Irregardless men such as Hume, Voltaire, Diderot, Locke, Jefferson established the American foundation, even if one grants their rationalist principles were often hypocritical or at times justified oppression of various sorts. Bourbons, or Robespierre?? The sum total of jacobin atrocities falls quite short of those of the ancien regime. ...PB Shelley hisself wept at Bonaparte's death.
